The Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) template should be used as a scalable tool to:

• identify the impact that a process (new or variation to a process), new product, service or a project might have on the privacy of an individual’s personal information; and
• make recommendations on how to manage any negative impacts.

A pre-assessment is included to assess whether a PIA is required. A PIA will not always be necessary, especially if personal information will not be collected/handled, there are no changes to existing information handling practices (and where there are privacy impacts,  these practices have been assessed previously and found to be appropriate and/or very low risk).

The Guideline sets out the key steps involved in a PIA and what each of those steps involves.
